This time, I want to talk about your Sun sign and your Rising or Ascendant sign. While most people may know what their Sun sign is, few, if any, probably know what their Ascendant or Rising sign is. In fact, most may not even know what that is.
The truth of it is that both have to do with the Sun. The Sun sign is the one the Sun is in from month to month during the year while the Ascendant or Rising sign is the sign the Sun is in during a particular time in the day. What?
While we are aware that the Sun goes from sign to sign each month over the course of a year moving through the 12 signs of the zodiac, few are aware that the Sun also travels through those same 12 signs every day, spending about 2 hours in each sign before it moves on to the next one.
So why should this be of any interest to anyone? Well, while our Sun sign speaks to who we are at our core, the Rising sign speaks to the persona or mask we display to the outside world. The two signs, along with the one the Moon is in at the time of your birth, give a good general picture of a person’s nature to an astrologer.
Using myself as an example, I’m a Taurus with Aquarius rising and a Cancer Moon. At my core, I’m very practical, grounded, and good with finances (Taurus is the natural ruler of the 2nd house of money in an astrology chart.)
However, that Aquarius makes me act and appear a little eccentric. I have a tendency to look at things from perspectives others might never think of. I’m a humanitarian, wanting to help others any way I can. Because of the Aquarius rising, I can become distant and cold when I feel others have hurt me once too often.
But then, for good measure, we throw in the Cancer Moon and you find that I’m very sentimental, easily wounded (although I’ve gotten better at that in later years), and can be very nurturing to those in need. That Cancer Moon also makes me somewhat psychic, which is added by the fact that my Aquarius rising is ruled by the planet Uranus, seen to rule over occult matters.
You can see if you only know your Sun sign, or someone else’s, the information and insight you miss out on in understanding yourself or someone else. That’s one of the reason I never try to guess someone’s Sun sign. Their Rising sign could be predominant enough to fool me.
For those of you who wonder why, even on internet sites, they ask you the time you were born, it’s because without that information it’s very difficult, although not impossible to figure what the Rising sign is. Sun, Rising, Moon are a combination of traits and energies that can help you understand your life and your journey so much better.
Let’s talk about what’s happening now. On Saturday, December 17th, the Full Moon will occur in the sign of Gemini at 11:36 p.m. EST.
The imagination is highly stimulated now and very creative things can be produced under its influence. It may cause you to seek out new experiences.
You may find yourself trying to rationalize your emotions. This can keep you from realizing how you really feel. There may also be quick flashes of temper and even spurts of resentment.
People tend to talk incessantly, which can annoy others. Restlessness can cause one to take many short journeys to alleviate feeling fidgety.
With the Sun in Sagittarius, this only turns up the heat on the desire for change. Guard against hasty speech or becoming overactive and overexcited.
This is a great time for learning as it allows for doing so quickly. It also aids the ability to teach what you know to others.
Venus, which has been in Capricorn since November 5th, now turns retrograde on Sunday, December 19th at 5:36 a.m. EST.
No matter what sign Venus is in, when it goes retrograde, its energies are bringing lessons that have to do with a great misunderstanding concerning love from either a past life or the past in this life. There can be such a memory of intense hurt that an individual will not risk being hurt again by exposing themselves to yet another relationship. The most notable trait is the obvious mistrust of any offer of love due to suspicions of ulterior motives.
Being placed in Capricorn this only intensifies morose feelings where love is concerned. Depression arises from the anger felt at having been hurt by those who we trusted.
Depression arises from the anger felt at having been hurt by those who we trusted.
Pessimism can be great when thinking about finding love.
Retrograde Venus in Capricorn brings the lesson of overcoming this negative emotional self-indulgence and striving for a climb to the heights of improvement. It must start with us, for like does attract like!
Great news!!! The rebirth of the Sun takes place as it enters the sign of Capricorn on Tuesday, December 21st, at 10:59 a.m. EST.
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, a strict but fair teacher. Capricorn is about improvement through learning. Time to get serious about what you want in your life. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t smile or have fun. It just means you have just entered the “no BS” zone that Sun in Capricorn energies creates. You can let it get you down or you can use the practicality of these energies to begin to build a life that has positive meaning for you.
Lift those feelings of melancholy by using self-discipline to create new habits that will ultimately give you an increased sense of freedom. It’s not about self-denial. It’s more about making practical choices that lead you to new, higher levels of improvement and achievement.
For those who celebrate Yule/the Winter Solstice, you know that this may be the longest night of the year, but with the dawn comes the lengthening rays of the Sun that slowly lead us to Spring where the possibilities for growth and creativity are endless. This is true for all peoples, of all faiths, no matter what holiday you celebrate at this time of the year.
If you celebrate a birthday during this transit of the Sun through Capricorn take special care of your knees. You want to remove any self-imposed tethers so that you can keep climbing to those goals as you remove the obstacles in your way. Be persistent, be patient, but never let pessimism hold you back or stop you.
Finally, we have Jupiter, which has kind of been doing a dance between Aquarius and Pisces all year. It entered Pisces for the first time this year on May 13th, went retrograde and backed itself back into Aquarius and then went direct. Now it’s ready to enter Pisces again on Tuesday, December 28th at 11:09 p.m. EST. What I said back in May still holds true –
The energies of this combination connect the ultimate intellectual values to the ultimate emotional values. The first is driven by a need to understand. The second is driven by a need to reconnect with the mystical, divine nature within each of us. The first deals with concepts that can be articulated while the second deals with concepts that are received more effectively through art, myth, or dreams.
Jupiter represents “head goals,” while Pisces represents “heart goals.” This can cause some clashes, depending on the circumstances of a situation.
The commonalities between Jupiter and Pisces come from the fact that, before the discovery of Neptune (the modern ruler of Pisces), Jupiter was considered to be the ruler of Pisces (and is still considered to be a co-ruler by some astrologers). Both are connected to a search which often turns spiritual in nature. Both are connected to values and faith, although their methods are different. That makes Jupiter in Pisces a profoundly spiritual energy that can cause those affected by it to approach religion/spirituality with a sense of yearning and awe.
The energy of this placement can also indicate problems with faith and values, possibly due to a lack of boundaries, unbridled expansion, lack of attention being paid to the realities of the world, and unrestrained expectations. Using the energies constructively and putting ones mind to it, boundaries can be created and the ability to put words to ones profound understanding and insight can be found.
This is truly a spiritual time when one can find meaning and direction to that side ones life.
As we reach the end of this year, there seems to be a lot of energies offering us opportunities for personal growth and understanding. I hope you find that these gifts serve you well.
Love & Blessed Be
