Full Moon 10

We’re merely hours away from the first Full Moon of 2019 so I thought I would take a little time and talk about the terms that are being used to describe this one and others like it.

We begin with the term “supermoon,” a term that has only been used for around 40 years and only came into prevalence in the last few years. That’s because, according to, it received a slew of attention when three supermoons occurred in a row in 2016.

So what is a supermoon? According to, it’s a new or full moon where the Moon is the closest to the Earth in its orbit. I know many people think the Moon’s orbit is round, but the truth is, it’s more elliptical. For 2019, 221,681 miles (356,761 km) will be its closest to the Earth while 252,622 miles (406,555 km) will be its farthest point. According to Richard Nolle, in 1979, in his original definition of supermoon, when the Moon comes to within 224,775 miles or 361,740 km or less, we have a supermoon.

We have three supermoons in a row this year, beginning with January 21st, but the closest supermoon will be February 19th when the Moon will close to 221,734 miles (356,846 km) of Earth. The third supermoon will occur on March 21st.

There will also be three supermoon New Moons this year. They will occur on August 1st, 30th, and September 28th.

So, we then come to the fact that some are calling this upcoming Full Moon a “blood moon” and you may be wondering why. The fact is that it’s a simple reference to the fact that there’s a total lunar eclipse happening during this Full Moon.

But why “blood moon”? According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, it’s because even though the Earth is passing between the Sun and the Moon, blocking the Sun‘s rays, not all of them are indeed blocked. Some of the rays are bent around the edge of the Earth, reaching the Moon’s surface. Our atmosphere scatters the blue/green rays but the orange/red rays reach our eyes like in a sunset.

This term caught on back in 2014-2015 when there were four consecutive total lunar eclipses and the media sensationalized them with end-of-the-world prophecies. Now some people hyperventilate every time they hear there’s going to be a “blood moon.” Truth is they’ve been happening forever and we’re all still here!

Full Moon 7

At 0:16 a.m. EST, January 21st, the Full Moon in Leo will occur. This is the first of three consecutive supermoons to occur this year. It’s known as the Wolf Moon and it’s the first Full Moon of the calendar year. It’s also known as the Old Moon, Ice Moon, and Snow Moon.

But here we are with a Full Moon, supermoon, possible blood moon (because of the total lunar eclipse) that has the Moon in Leo and the Sun in Aquarius. What does that mean? Well, for one, the love nature is intensified. You have Leo, which rules the heart, paired with the Aquarius that loves all mankind. This is an excellent energy to help spread love that will personally heal us and heal our world as well.

You have both feeling and intellect working here. Which one will be dominant for you depends on the balance of intellect and feeling that lies within you. The intellect is active and there is a lively imagination that can help to achieve great things.

By itself, the Moon in Leo brings warmth, kindness, and generosity flowing around us. We only need to reach out and tap into those energies to experience them. It can also bestow ambition, a desire for independence, and the qualities of leadership.

For some, they will find that they need recognition, appreciation, and admiration. If these aren’t forthcoming, they may become drama queens to get the attention they desire.

This being a supermoon and an eclipse, this is an excellent time to cut the energetic cord to anything or anyone that affects you emotionally in such a way as to slow you down or stop you from reaching the goals you want to achieve.

There’s a lot of positive energy with this Full Moon. Enjoy what it can bring to you!

Mercury in Aquarius 2

Later in the week, on Thursday, January 24th, Mercury will enter Aquarius at 0:50 a.m. EST. It’s an interesting energy, for those affected by it, as it opens the mind to new experiences and gives the ability to see things in the light of impersonal truth. This allows for a mind that is truthful, unbiased, and objective which can make you an excellent judge of human nature.

The energy of Mercury in Aquarius manifests high intuitive faculties through communication with the Universal Mind because it transcends the individual ego. Thus, it enables individuals to experience Life beyond the five physical senses. There could be telepathic experiences.

Because this gives the ability to see things in broad terms, it promotes humanitarianism, even concern for the spiritual unfolding of humanity.

This is also a great time for all forms of occult study, especially astrology.

venus in capricorn 3

Venus moves into Capricorn on Sunday, February 3rd, at 5:30 p.m. EST. bringing possible cold and detached feelings to the normally warm and intimate Venus.

On one hand, it can affect some making them faithful and domestic, preferring to stay home instead of a lot of social life. On the other hand, it can cause some to be selfish, expecting more from other people then they are willing to give, spending lots of money in a quest for a good time.

It can incline some to be jealous, suspicious, and touchy because they are afraid of being refused or rejected. There will be those who need every encouragement before they can relax and love. Should they feel rejected, they can become antagonistic and cold.

It’s really a tough positioning for Venus where love and romance are concerned. Perhaps the best advice with this placement and its energies is to choose wisely and be self-assured.

Celestial Banner

Well, that’s it for now. I’ll be back in two weeks to talk about the New Moon and the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Pig/Boar. Until then, may the stars be your guide and the Sun and Moon light your path.
