Lunar Eclipse 4

With the eclipse arriving on Monday, August 21st, I wanted to share some things about safely viewing the eclipse that might be helpful.

First of all, if you’re not one of the lucky ones to live in that narrow band that stretches across the USA who will get to see the total eclipse, I want to include the link to NASA’s web page again “Total Eclipse”.

Let’s talk about what you shouldn’t do. Don’t try to view the eclipse through glasses, sunglasses, binoculars, telescopes, smoked glass, polarizing filters or exposed color film. According to an article by wikiHow, although these objects will block visible light wavelengths, they don’t block ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths and these are the ones that cause damage to the eye.

There are a number of ways you can safely view the eclipse, even if you haven’t gotten a pair of the eclipse glasses that so many sites are offering.

You can make an eclipse viewer or pinhole projector quite easily at home. According to that same article in wikiHow:

*Poke a small hole using a pin or thumbtack through the center of a piece of cardstock. Place a second piece of paper on the ground to serve as the screen you will be projecting the eclipse onto.

*Standing with your back to the sun, hold the card a few feet off the ground above your shoulder or to your side. Make sure your head is not covering up the hole. It should be held in the direction of the sun and you should be facing the screen you placed on the ground.

*When the projector is properly aligned, you should see a perfect circle on the other piece of card you placed on the ground. The circle may appear fuzzy at the edges.

*You can bring it into sharper focus by moving the pinhole projector closer or further away from the ground.

*When the eclipse takes place, that circle will shrink and turn into a crescent, if it is a partial eclipse. If it is a total eclipse, then it will turn into a thin-lined O.

You can also use welder’s glasses that are shade number 14 or higher. Be sure that the glass covers your eyes at all times of observation. You can even use them as a filter in front of binoculars for closer viewing. Just make sure to keep the lens covered at all times of viewing.

If you have a telescope, and want to use it, then you need a solar filter. These are actually available for all viewing equipment – cameras, binoculars, and telescopes.

No matter how you choose to view this once-in-a-lifetime event, be sure to do so safely. You don’t want it to be the last thing you ever see. Check out the article “Viewing a Solar Eclipse”. It’s very informative.

New Moon in Leo

We’ve all heard about the total solar eclipse happening during the New Moon in Leo on Monday, August 21st at 2:30 p.m. EDT. Do you know what energies it brings?

Think about this – the Moon rules our emotions, for the most part, and Leo rules the heart. That makes these energies about being loving and lovable. It brings a potential for understanding, appreciation, and affection.

The other side of the coin is that, because some have a dire need for recognition, admiration, and appreciation, there can be those who will become drama queens under the influence of these energies.

What can you use these energies for as a “new beginning”? Leo also deals with the ego. If there is any trait you have, that you would like to see its power over you “eclipsed”, light a candle and some incense and see that trait as an actual living being that you now cut the cord to and send on its way. Do this as the Sun is actually eclipsed by the Moon at 2:30 p.m. EDT and you will take its power over you away. Key to this is that you must believe, without any doubt or fear, that this is true.

The Moon in Leo is a time of refusing to recognize limitations, of independence, and leadership. Apply all these things to yourself and a new beginning will be yours!

Virgo 3

On Tuesday, August 22nd, at 6:21 p.m. EDT, the Sun enters Virgo. Virgo is an earth sign and somewhat introverted, like Taurus. It is, however, adaptable because of its mutable nature.

Virgo is very meticulous and analytical. While this does make it an excellent time to take care of anything that requires attention to detail, be careful not to get sucked into another Virgo trait – being too critical. This can be either of yourself or others. It comes from a Virgo need to find perfection in most everything.

Being too analytical, too meticulous, too critical can create worry and even become destructive to your health, relationships, and more.

Be adaptable, orderly, practical, analytical, communicative and temper it all with harmony and balance for a very positive transit of the Sun through Virgo!

Saturn in Sagittarius 3

Saturn has been retrograde in Sagittarius for almost 5 months now. On Friday, August 25th, at 8:09 a.m. EDT, it will once more turn direct.

When it went retrograde on April 6th, I said, “the energies may be pointing out that we need to take a look at how well we take the advice of others. We should also look at whether the advice we give to others is advice we don’t adhere to ourselves.

There may also be a need to look at the traditions (or habits) we follow and withdraw from the ones that appear to have outlived their usefulness.

It’s time to allow our higher minds to guide us, to help us to understand and correct past mistakes, and help us to be open to change.”

How many of us have allowed this energy to teach us something? With it turning direct, we now face the original energy of Saturn in Sagittarius – that it does not tend to easy success, although it doesn’t deny success either. Instead, we may face delays, setbacks, and disappointments before we accomplish what we set out to do.

Perhaps this is the reason we should be taking a close look at the advice we give others and, also, why we should allow our higher minds to guide us.

Venus in Leo.jpg

Venus enters Leo on Saturday, August 26th at 0:30 a.m. EDT. These energies naturally attract the warmest feelings on the part of others, if you are tapped into them.

This energy is about being a lover of Life. It’s also about tapping into our will power and using it. It’s about self-sacrifice for a worthy cause or for the happiness and welfare of those we love and care about.

Yes, there can be prima donnas who feel they need to be the center of attention, but for the most part, these energies are warm-hearted, outgoing, sunny, and affectionate. Use them to bring happiness to yourself and others.

Mercury in Leo 2

Retrograde Mercury has backed up so far that on Thursday, August 31st, at 11:29 a.m. EDT, it will find itself in the sign of Leo once again.

With Mercury ruling the mind and Leo ruling the heart, this is an excellent position – even when retrograde – for Mercury and an unbeatable combination.

Being retrograde, it brings us an energy that allows us to see how balanced we are between our head and our heart. Does one overshadow the other? Are we intellectualizing our emotions for fear of being vulnerable?

There are many lessons brought by this retrograde combination, continuity of planning and purpose being one of them. There’s also mental self-confidence. You might also question if you have the ability to lead in some endeavor but have pushed it away out of fear or doubt.

Whatever the circumstance may be, allow Mercury in Leo to open your eyes to infinite possibilities!

Mars in Virgo

Mars moves into Virgo on Tuesday, September 5th at 5:35 a.m. EDT. This may cause some to become too critical of others; having definite ideas about what’s good and bad for others in general.

If this trait is channeled in a positive manner, it can be a good asset for anyone, but for those who need to pay close attention to detail like a computer programmer, or a secretary, or even someone in the medical field.

This position is best used for acquiring knowledge and then putting it into practical use. It’s a very careful and discreet energy.

Working hard comes naturally, although strenuous activity will only be tolerated for a practical purpose. Opportunities will come in connection to practical activities.

Mercury Direct

A couple hours later, retrograde Mercury in Leo will turn direct on Tuesday, September 5th. At 7:30 a.m. EDT, the energies of Mercury in Leo will now offer us the opportunity to show affection, loyalty, and respect.

This is also a great time for public speeches, acting or writing. If you do none of these things, then perhaps you have an ability to plan or direct and should use those talents now.

If you allow yourself to be mentally self-confident, you will may find you have a real knack for tackling and solving problems.

Remember the message of Mercury in Leo retrograde and let your true self shine through!

Well, that was quite a trip through the planets! After lazing around for a while, they got up and started moving! Almost time for me to do the same. I will be back in a few weeks, not only with the next issue of Musings, but with a new article for you in “The Journey Continues.” Time certainly does fly!!!
