In astrology, the Moon is considered a planet, as is the Sun. They are the only two “planets” that never go retrograde. Why? Well in the case of the Sun, it’s stationary position, that allows us to orbit it, makes it appear to always rise in the East and set in the West of our own Earth each day. There is never an illusion of it passing backward to our orbit around it.
The case is similar with the Moon, only here it is orbiting us, always rising in the East and setting in the West and thus never appearing to move backward or retrograde to us.
There are many theories as to how the Moon came to be the satellite of our planet. Some say it was once part of Earth and, through a collision with another planetary body, was thrown away, into orbit, around Earth. Others say it was a “wanderer” that got caught in the gravitational field of Earth and has remained there ever since. Heck, there’s even a theory that it’s not a natural planetary body but artificially made and was placed here by other intelligent beings. Who am I to say if any of these are correct or if there’s another, entirely different explanation?
What I can tell you is that the Moon has a great deal of energetic influence on both the planet and the living beings that reside here. It’s a well-known fact that the phases of the Moon have an effect on the tides of our oceans. It is also fairly well known that some humans are affected by the Moon in its Full phase. Perhaps this is the reason that the primary area that is governed by the Moon in an astrology chart is the emotions. Always look to the placement of the Moon in your natal chart to see where your emotional strengths and weaknesses lie.
The Moon rules the sign of Cancer – a water sign. (Hmmm…perhaps this explains why it influences the tides?) It is also the natural ruler of the fourth house which represents home and domestic affairs and, in older astrology, represents ones mother. All of these things have an emotional impact on us and our lives.
If you really want to get to know yourself on an emotional level, start paying closer attention as to how both the phase the Moon is in and the sign the Moon is in has on you. Since the Moon does travel through all the signs of the zodiac and all of its phases in approximately one month, you can start to get a picture of how the ebb and flow of these energies affect your reactions both internally and externally to what may be going on in your life.
If you also take a look at the sign the Sun is in, and observe this in combination with the Moon’s phase and sign, you can begin to get a clear picture of the influence these energies may be having on you. That then gives you the choice to continue to live “by default” or to become aware of the daily energies and become in charge of how you choose to respond to your daily journey through Life.
Ah yes, that “little” glowing ball in the sky is quite beautiful but it can also be quite revealing, if we choose to take the time to listen to what it has to tell us.
Speaking of the Moon, there’s a New Moon happening in the sign of Gemini on Thursday, May 25th at 3:44 p.m. EDT.
With Mercury as the ruler of Gemini, the Moon in Gemini can produce a restless energy that makes people want to create change, move, travel and/or just be talkative. It also stimulates the imagination which can give rise to highly creative work in such fields as writing, music, or speaking.
With the Sun also in Gemini, there can be a tendency to measure everything from an intellectual standpoint and to rational ones emotions. Speaking of emotions, there can be some willfulness with this combination. Perhaps it comes from the need for independence. It can also cause nervousness and being fidgety. This can cause frequent changes of mind – the person not being able to focus and decide what it is that they really want. One last thing on the downside of this lunar placement – it can produce people who enjoy telling lies, so much so that they forget everything about the truth.
But, hey, it’s a New Moon! If you’re looking for a new beginning that involves a change of residence or job, this may be the opportune time to get it done and have it happen quickly. Just make sure of your decision before you take any actions. It’s also a great time for beginning new studies, whether you’re the teacher or the student. Take advantage of these wonderful, intellectual energies to help propel you forward toward your educational goals.
On Sunday, June 4th, at 12:16 p.m. EDT Mars will enter Cancer. Here, the aggressive energies of Mars are subdued. Those affected by these energies will put up a fight only when forced to do so. Some will choose to use guilt to keep things under control while others will sidle into things (lie the Cancerian crab) in hopes that more assertive people won’t drive them away.
Difficulties involving the home (which Cancer rules) could arise. Mars isn’t well positioned here and it can attract domestic discord. Don’t sit and worry about this possibility though. Instead use your intuition to sense when negativity may be close at hand. That intuition is powerful right now.
This is a good time for psychic development and, with practice, you could have good results in astral projection, past-life recall, and Tarot reading, in particular.
Venus will begin its sojourn through Taurus on June 6th at 3:27 a.m. EDT. making emotional security and stability in love important to some who are affected by these energies.
Ones sense of touch may be heightened and physical contact with loved ones can be most enjoyable now. People may be more passive, seeking to attract rather than pursue their love interests.
Beautifying the home and the person will be of importance to some. Venus in Taurus loves comfort, luxury, good food and even opulence. That also makes the money that can provide all these things very attractive now. Income could be provided through artistic expression.
Nature will gently call you and you may find that you gain solace and pleasure from flowers, trees, and other plants. Gardening may ease tensions.
Guard your throat. While Venus in Taurus may provide you a beautiful voice, illnesses may go right to your throat and larynx.
All in all a very pleasant, enjoyable time.
Mercury moves into Gemini on Tuesday, June 6th, at 6:15 p.m. EDT. This is one of the signs that Mercury rules so it’s a very good placement that provides versatility and logical reasoning.
This is a time when communication, in any form, should be easy, rapid, and accurate. It’s a great time for study and learning, especially in languages and mathematics. In some cases, the mind may be rather like a calculator.
If you have this placement or are affected by it, you could find it difficult to shut out external stimuli. This could cause you to have to deal with many thoughts and impressions at once. When subjected to this type of environment for too long, nerves can become frazzled, possibly followed by fatigue, confusion and irritability. The solution? Solitude. A place where you can become quiet, meditate and refocus your mind. This is an imperative.
Your curiosity may be heightened and you may find you have an interest in knowing everything. Don’t spread yourself too thin though! You may find that you don’t have the wherewithal to complete the projects that you’ve undertaken, if you take on too many.
While this can provide a very inventive, original mind, don’t allow the ability to see situations from many points of view to cause others confusion because you are often changing your mind. If used correctly, these energies can help you find new and surprising solutions for problems that seemed unsolvable before.
May the stars and planets be your guide and help you learn all about yourself! See you in two weeks.
