Astrological Musings & More

Do you celebrate the Chinese New Year? Do you at least find interest in what animal year we are in each year? Chinese astrology has twelve signs, just like our own astrology, but they are each represented by an animal and, unlike our own, last for a whole year rather than a month. This is expanded by the fact that the Chinese recognize five elements – wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Each of the twelve animal years cycles through these five elements. So, it actually takes 60 years to return to the animal in the element it was in when you were born. For example, I was born in the year of the Earth Rat. Every 12 years, it returned to the Year of the Rat, but it wasn’t until I was 60 that it returned to the Year of the Earth Rat. So while I will see the Year of the Rat again in 2020, I will have to live until I’m 120 to see another Year of the Earth Rat.

The beginning of each Chinese New Year is not a set date. How it is calculated is also unique. I was taught that the Chinese New Year begins the day after the first New Moon of the calendar New Year that follows the first Full Moon of that year. I recently ran across information stating that the Chinese New Year is calculated by finding the second New Moon after the Winter Solstice. This, by the way, is the same as I was taught only stated differently.

This year is the year of the Rooster. Specifically, it’s the Fire Rooster. Rooster, by itself, is considered to be a Yin metal animal. To be combined with fire this year, is a strong, dramatic energy. People born in this year can be rash, audacious, and argumentative, and they are never inconspicuous. Like the people born under this sign, you can use this energy to single-mindedly pursue your goals. Look ahead to the long-term future and Fire Rooster will help you to not get lost in the details along the way. This is the sign of people of action, leaders, heroes, and pioneers.

If you’re not a Rooster, you might want to find out how you will be affected by this year. I recommend, The New Chinese Astrology by Suzanne White. She does an excellent job of explaining each sign and how they are affected by the other Chinese year signs.

New Moon in Aquarius
There’s a lot of energy changes happening this time and it all begins with the New Moon that’s happening on Friday, January 27th at 7:07 p.m. EST.

With the Moon in Aquarius, love is more impersonal. Aquarius energy is the energy of the humanitarian. It’s Universal love rather than personal, intimate love. People are very friendly, but perhaps distant.

With the Sun and Moon both in Aquarius the intellect has intensified clearness and brightness. The mind is positive, self-reliant, original and fairly active.

As new beginnings go, an Aquarius New Moon wants you to be innovative, inventive, and unconventional. Freedom and independence are its greatest gifts – if you are open to receiving them. Breaking the bonds of restrictions and limitation (especially if it is self-imposed) is another goal and offering of a New Moon in Aquarius.

So, if the old isn’t working and your looking for a new approach to anything in your life, this New Moon is the one you’ve been waiting for!

On Saturday, January 28th, the Chinese Year of the Rooster begins. The energies are there, whether you have a belief in them or not, to be brave, enthusiastic, resilient, adventurous, proficient, communicative, and witty. The down-side of this year’s energy could also find you cranky, fussy, vain, egotistical, cynical, over-zealous, and quixotic as hell. The choice is yours. I say, “Go for the positive!” Remember, Rooster’s motto is, “I know better.”

Mars in Aries 2

That same day, Saturday, January 28th, at 0:39 a.m. EST Mars moves into Aries, the sign it rules.

This placement provides a great deal of energy of the kind that moves us forward. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and can be said to be the point of all beginnings. It’s the kind of energy that creates the emergence of the sprouting seed in the Spring – forceful, powerful.

It can also cause impulsiveness and the tendency to leap before you look. Some people will create too many irons in the fire to successfully control. This can cause stress and/or the feeling of failure because too much was taken on.

In relationships, the effects of Mars in Aries can cause a person to want to be the dominant partner. People affected by this energy need a challenge in their relationships and they are also highly competitive.

While Mars is in Aries, there can be cuts, burns happen. Injuries to the head can also happen as Aries rules the head. So be aware and take care during this transit.

If you are affected by these energies, you may find yourself really desiring a physical outlet now. Mars and Aries both are quite physically oriented. If you’ve been thinking of starting an exercise program of some kind, this would be a good time to start.

All in all, this is a very assertive, even aggressive, energy that wants us to move forward, be pioneers and go where we’ve never gone before!

Thursday, February 2nd is Ground Hog’s day to some and Imbolg/Candlemas to others. Any way you choose to look at it, it’s about the waxing light and the approach of Spring. We’ve had six weeks of Winter and we are SO ready for Spring!

Once again the energies are helping us to move forward. The light of the Sun is waxing, the Earth is beginning to warm for those of us in the northern hemisphere. We feel ourselves becoming more hopeful as the days grow longer. What an awesome feeling!

Then on Friday, February 3rd at 10:52 a.m. EST, Venus moves into Aries as well. This is a brilliant, exciting energy for Venus, rather than being soothing, domestic or calm.

Venus, the planet of love, in the sign of Aries can make people emotionally impulsive. That can make people passionate and aggressive one minute and cold and disinterested the next because they are more interested in the conquest that in settling down.

Venus is not its most typical here, but it is a great placement for those dedicated to achievement, not wanting to be distracted by Venus’ pleasures, comforts and social leanings.

Jupiter Retrograde

After four weeks of all the planets being in direct motion, on Monday, February 6th, at 1:52 a.m. EST, Jupiter will turn retrograde in the sign of Libra.

Retrograde, this placement of Jupiter will bring to some of us the lessons of justice and fairness. These could be expressed in the discovery of animosity we may still be carrying from early in this life or from a former lifetime. It could also express itself by showing us that, out of fear that we might hurt another, we don’t fully express all that we feel.

We may be challenged to learn to put ourselves in another person’s place so that from that vantage point we can develop a more balanced view of things. All this can lead us to learning how to detach ourselves from all that previously bothered us and come from our higher mind/being. We will reach our greatest joy when we are able to center our outlook on life. This is the gift and lesson of retrograde Jupiter in Libra.

Mercury in Aquarius 3

Finally, on Thursday, February 7th, Mercury will move into Aquarius at 4:36 a.m. EST. The energy of this placement allows ones mine to be open to new experience. It allows us to view things in the light of impersonal truth.

Aquarius, being a fixed sign, stabilizes and concentrates mental energy. This allows those affected by these energies to manifest high intuition especially when in communication with the Universal Mind. Being telepathic is possible.

This is the energy of the true humanitarian because we are able to see things in broad terms. Impersonal objectivity allows us to see ‘truths’ we might otherwise miss. There will be no surprises for any affected by these energies by anything seen or experience.

This is a great time for group or organizational work. Mental stimulation will be sought out and delight will be found in the company of intellectual and elderly persons.

If you have or haven’t noticed, the energies are all flowing in such a way as to promote progress and success. Even retrograde Jupiter is offering a chance to learn and grow. It is only we who will hold ourselves back.
