It will be another ten days before the Sun does its yearly transit through Libra, but I wanted to write about this interesting sign before it happens rather than after.
I think one of the greatest misconceptions about the energies of the sign of Libra is the word “balance”. Most people assume that having a Libra Sun, Moon, Rising or Libra influence in some other form in your chart means you have accomplished balance and harmony. Not so, my friends. It means you have added this energy to your chart so that you can work on the lessons that come with attaining balance and harmony in your life.
Although there is no myth, per se, about the sign of Libra, about 2000 BCE, the Babylonian religions associated this constellation with judgment of the living and the dead – the scales weighed the soul. The harvest was weighed when the Full Moon was in Libra, in Egypt.
Libra is the natural ruler of the 7th house of partnership in the astrological chart. They value partnership in all forms. When it comes to more personal, intimate relationships, you could say Libra falls in love with love. For this reason, they can rush into a relationship before they’re ready. Some partners will find it quite easy to take advantage of Libra’s pleasant, casual qualities.
Libra is an air sign and, therefore, the mind and intellect are important tools for anyone under the influence of this sign. One of the reasons that indecision seems to plague them is because Libra sees all sides to all problems and situations. Some even say that before a Libra can make a decision they must view a problem from each degree of the 360 degrees surrounding it. A lot of this has to do with their sense of justice and their dislike of quarrels. Easily swayed by the opinions of others, forming their own conclusions is of great importance.
Libra is charming, optimistic and easy-going by nature. Self-expression, in all areas of life, is essential to the nature and well-being of Libra. That appearance of indecision can give the impression that Libra is lazy. In those moments of what appears to be inactivity, Libra is using their minds to analyze how best to help before taking action.
When you speak of Libra and careers, you have to take into consideration its ruler – Venus. Venus, and Libra, enjoy beauty and the arts. A career where those can be used and created will bring them much joy. Such fields as beautician, hairdresser, milliner, dress designer, artist, musician will allow them to create beauty. Libra also makes a good diplomat, social worker, or even a receptionist with their ability to be charming and good-natured.
We should all cultivate some of these qualities of Libra. The world and our lives would be better for it!
While we wait for the Sun to enter Libra, we can celebrate the New Moon that will occur on Sunday, September 13th at 2:41 a.m. EDT. The Moon will be in Virgo, as will the Sun. There will also be a solar eclipse that will only be visible in the southern parts of Africa and Madagascar along with parts of Antarctica.
The energy of this New Moon increases discrimination, self-reliance, independence, and foresight. Virgo is good for dealing with details or doing detailed work. Just be careful not to go overboard and become too hair-splitting in your dealings.
Your new beginning? Well, if it’s time to break out of any mold and become independent, this is an opportune time. With the solar eclipse, it’s a good time to take your power back from any situation that seems to have robbed you of it. Break the ties at the moment the eclipse is occurring, even though you can’t see it, the energy is there.
Virgo is good for cleaning and organizing so use this New Moon to sweep away, let go, get rid of whatever doesn’t work for you anymore and start fresh!
And then we move to Mercury in Libra and the fact it will be turning retrograde on Thursday, September 17th at 2:10 p.m. EDT.
This is one of the more difficult positions for a retrograde Mercury. Individuals may feel out of balance with the need to center and, therefore, have strong feelings of non-direction.
People affected by this energy may find indecisiveness to be a big problem now. This could even be a karmic lesson rearing its head. Those around you may find it hard to understand you during this retrograde period. As you wobble back and forth trying to achieve balance, you may find yourself being concerned as to whether those around you approve or disapprove of your decisions when you finally make them.
People might be extremely contrary and difficult now. Dishonesty could also be a problem for some.
When Mercury is direct in Libra the need for direct, honest communication with others is of prime importance. Now, with Mercury retrograde, that energy is directed inward. You will find balance and harmony when you know that you are communicating in a direct and honest manner with yourself. What a lesson!
Then, we have Saturn moving into Sagittarius on Thursday, September 17th at 10:47 p.m. EDT. It is here that the energies make achieving success a little more difficult. It’s not denied to anyone, just harder to reach.
The energy of this placement gives thoroughness, seriousness, intellectuality, concentration, and discipline. All of these help us to achieve our goals no matter how many obstacles or delays we may face.
It’s not all “nose to the grindstone” energy though. There is compassion and understanding of human nature. There is also occult tendencies like intuitive understanding and prophetic insight.
Saturn is known for being a stern teacher, but the rewards are always worth the effort!
Monday, September 21st we should all set aside some time to meditate on peace, to feel it with every fiber of our being and to let it ripple out across the planet. It is so needed right now and we each have the power to help.
The Autumn Equinox, when the Sun moves into Libra, will be happening on Wednesday, September 23rd at 4:21 a.m. EDT. It only makes sense that a celestial occurrence that sees day and night as equal would happen as the Sun moves into the sign of balance!
While this is a time of flowing communication and intelligence (being an air sign), it is also about achieving a balance between self and others.
It is a time when the energies are seeking harmony and avoiding discord; a time when beauty and refinement is sought after and crudeness is left alone.
Indecision can be a problem during this time as the energies tend to want us to look at all sides and that takes time. Once again, a balance must be achieved. This time between thought and action.
Overall, this is a pleasant, easygoing time where we can be idealistic and romantic but need to take care not to become frivolous and gullible.
To all those who celebrate their birthdays during this time…
Mars will be transiting into Virgo at 10:18 p.m. EDT on Thursday, September 24th. This energy is very physical and, therefore, very hardworking. It can also tend to create an energy that makes some people over-critical of others. This can be because they have very definite ideas about what is good or bad for people in general and especially those they care about. If used correctly, this can be a great motivating energy to help people.
This placement tends to cause people to act without emotional involvement. This is great for calculating and determining ones next move because there is no emotional distraction.
As Venus has to do with love, Mars has to do with sex and with Mars in Virgo sex is discreet. This energy can make you emotionally dense when it comes to picking up on someone’s romantic signals, but blatant overtures will be a turn-off.
Lack of preparation, during this transit, can leave one feeling worried, while impulsiveness may leave some feeling guilty. There’s a time and a place for spontaneity, but Mars in Virgo makes it difficult.
So what is this transit good for? Well, it’s best used for acquiring knowledge and putting it to practical use. “Be prepared!” is not just for Boy Scouts.
Lastly, we have Pluto in Capricorn which has been retrograde since April 17th. On Friday, September 25th, it will turn direct giving us a chance to use all we have learned since it went retrograde.
If you remember I said, “Pluto is about transformation, especially where it concerns the removal of those things that no longer serve good purpose. Capricorn is an earth sign, ruled by Saturn (who brings us lessons), and is all about the physical world and structure.
“Whatever part of your chart has Capricorn in it, that’s where Pluto is and that’s where this retrograde will take place. Lasting until late September, this retrograde transit will ferret out those things, in that area of your life, that need transforming. To ignore or deny this necessary change to manifest in any number of unpleasant ways.
“The good news is that to be open to change can produce some wonderful opportunities in your life. The key is being willing (really willing) to let go. That means being open to the “death” or destruction of things in your life so that Pluto can create the “rebirth” of something new.”
So, what has been happening in your life? Has retrograde Pluto in Capricorn brought you some interesting and challenging lessons? What did you learn?
With the direct motion of Pluto in Capricorn, you have the opportunity to use what you’ve learned to make changes for yourself and to help others, should they need it. That’s a total win-win situation!
That was a long one! I hope it provides some useful information for you. May your “harvest” be bountiful and Fall bring you much joy!
