Astrological Musings & More

Our Solar SystemOf all the things I’ve written about, I’m not sure that I’ve ever offered a definition or explanation of the importance of “aspects”.

To quote The New A to Z Horoscope Maker and Delineator by Llewellyn George:
“Aspect: An aspect is a certain angular distance between the points in the Zodiac; from one planet to another or from a planet to a point in the chart, as for instance, the Ascendant…”

There are sixteen aspects used in astrology which are classified as Major, Minor and negligible.

The Major aspects consist of sextile which is 60 degrees apart; square which is 90 degrees apart; trine which is 120 degrees apart; opposition which is 180 degrees apart; conjunction which is 0 degrees apart and parallel which is equal distance from the celestial equator.

The Minor aspects are semi-sextile which is 30 degrees apart; semi-square which is 45 degrees apart; quintile which is 72 degrees apart; sesquiquadrate which is 135 degrees apart; bi-quintile which is 144 degrees apart and quincunx which is 150 degrees apart.

There are four other aspects which are considered negligible: vigintile which is 18 degrees apart; quindecile which is 24 degrees apart; decile which is 36 degrees apart and tredecile which is 108 degrees apart.

Just like so many other things in this reality, some of these aspects are considered good while others are considered adverse or challenging.

Sextile, trine, semi-sextile, quintile, bi-quintile, vigintile, quindecile, decile and tredecile are all categorized as being good or slightly good.

Square, opposition, semi-square, sesquiquadrate and quincunx are adverse or slightly adverse.

Conjunctions and parallels can be either good or adverse depending on what two energies are coming together to form them.

Okay. So now you must be asking yourself, “Why should I care about any of this?” The answer is basically that an awareness of the aspects formed within your natal chart by the planets and points placed there can help you to make your journey through life easier and help to explain why there are times when things are exceptionally challenging. They can also help point the way to talents and abilities you have or lessons you came to learn. Are you a believer in karma and reincarnation? If so, they can help you see the karma you came in to resolve. This is sometimes done by taking on the challenge of the adverse aspects and finding ways to change that energy into something more positive.

On a daily basis, becoming aware of and using the aspects formed every day by the planets can aid you in finding the simplest way to solve problems or alert you of when the day may cause you delays and frustrations, making you more prepared for when those possible challenges arise.

Like any other part of astrology, aspects can make us aware of the energies that are surrounding us. We have entered a time when being aware of, not only our own energies, but those that surround us in the outside world can be a great advantage to our progress, our receiving abundance in all its forms, and our feelings of love and joy. I, for one, am open to using ANY tool that will help make my journey easier and more joyous! How about you?

New Moon BlackFor now, let’s talk about the New Moon that will be occurring on Sunday, March 30th @ 2:45 p.m. EDT. This is the second New Moon of the month and is therefore referred to as a Black Moon. Considered to have “special” significance, like a Blue Moon (the second Full Moon of a month), opening to its energies can be very beneficial.

With the Sun and Moon both in Aries energies are excitable and filled with pioneering spirit. There’s a desire to take the lead, to forge ahead into the “new”.

There’s great activity of thought and a quickness of perception. This combination increases self-esteem and independence.

Caution should be taken not to allow yourself become domineering, intolerant, or unyielding. Troubles can follow rash action or impulsive decisions.

If you focus on the positive energies of this New Moon, it will provide excellent timing for new beginnings, especially into areas you’ve never been before!

Venus in PiscesNext, Venus will move into Pisces on Saturday, April 5th at 4:31 p.m. EDT giving us energies that are loving, emotional and idealistic. People tend to be more considerate of others and doing nice things quietly for others rather than expecting a show of gratitude.
This is a romantic, sensitive sign and, for that reason, those seeking a relationship should take care, during this transit, to whom they give their hearts. It could result in feeling lonely and disappointed.

This is a great time for artists as Venus is at her finest in Pisces. Pisces provides intuitive inspiration and innate ability for artistic creativity.

If you are affected by these energies, you may find yourself highly sensitive to the suffering of others which also will leave you open to being taken advantage of by those same people.

Overall, this can be a very positive time for any form of creating and feeling in love with Life.

Mercury in AriesMercury goes into Aries on Monday, April 7th at 11:35 a.m. EDT giving the mind brilliance and strength. Some may find it difficult to focus or concentrating for long. The mind will be in search of stimulation – new ideas, intellectual adventures, and quick repartee.

If you have to think fast on your feet, this transit will be of great aid. It provides the quick, clever answer. There is originality of thought as well as impatience when others don’t see things your way.

Although this provides good energies for leadership, one should guard against being willful and headstrong.

Like all the planetary placements, if you focus on the good Mercury in Aries can provide you, it will give you new ideas, quick answers and allow you to be witty and amusing!

Pluto RetrogradePluto, which has been in Capricorn since late November of 2008, will turn retrograde once again on Monday, April 14th at 7:44 p.m. EDT.

When Pluto is retrograde it is a time of spiritual growth, limited only by our conscious minds. There is a need to fulfill individual growth. Without this growth, we can regress. When we regress, because we truly are all connected, we impede planetary growth. For ourselves and everyone else, this is a time where we need to release all that no longer serves us and open ourselves to new ideas, new perspectives and new ways of doing and being.

With Pluto in Capricorn, it especially becomes a lesson of how to link our individuality and our philosophies with that of the society and culture we find ourselves in this lifetime. It becomes an increasing awareness of both ones power and powerlessness within that society and how this can be used for the good of all.

Related lessons dealing with self-discipline, self-determination and, sometimes, submission to a higher authority can occur during this retrograde of Pluto in Capricorn. If we are to spiritually evolve, we must release such things as guilt and the need to manipulate others. Lessons involving these factors may also make an appearance now so that they may be released.

Yes, this can be a heavy experience, but it can also be a very freeing one.
