Have I ever mentioned an astrological phenomena called “mutual reception”? Well, even if I have, it bears repeating right now.
Mutual reception occurs when two planets occupy each other’s sign. For example: Sun in Scorpio with Pluto in Leo (Sun rules Leo and Pluto rules Scorpio) – that’s mutual reception. It’s also found in the chart of many Baby-boomers who are Scorpios. There’s also such examples as Jupiter in Gemini with Mercury in Sagittarius; Mars in Libra with Venus in Aries; Moon in Aquarius with Uranus in Cancer, etc.
Ancient astrologers believed that planets in mutual reception stabilized the energies of both planets. This is especially true if the two planets are in favorable aspect to one another (sextile, trine or even conjunct). It becomes a little more difficult if they are in unfavorable aspect to one another (square or opposite).
Failure to balance the energies of the two planets in mutual reception can cause tension in ones life, particularly when we are talking about the mutual receptions that occur in someone’s natal/birth chart.
Right now, we have Saturn in Scorpio and Pluto in Capricorn and this will have an effect not only those who are born during the time this mutual reception occurs – Saturn entered Scorpio on October 6, 2012 beginning the mutual reception with Pluto which has been in Capricorn since January 26, 2008 – but on the planet as a whole because Pluto is seen by many as a “generational” planet.
To top it all off, both these planets are now retrograde and, together, will remain so until July 8th when Saturn turns direct once more. Pluto will remain retrograde until September 21st. They will, however, still remain in mutual reception until December 24, 2014.
Okay, so that’s the groundwork, but what does that mean? Let me break it down for you piece by piece.
Saturn is seen as the great teacher and some astrologers even view it as a karmic planet because of its limiting effects. Its energies strengthen us through persistence and endurance. It often teaches through the lesson of responsibility which often requires discipline.
Pluto, on the other hand, is all about transformation, regeneration and rebirth. While it is about decay, destruction, disintegration and elimination, it is also about cleansing and healing.
When you place Saturn in Scorpio it’s about financial responsibility, both personal and the affairs of others. In business, it relates to corporate financing and tax accounting. Thoroughness, persistence, and determination are the rule with Saturn in Scorpio, giving a drive for success that is equaled by only a few other positions. It can also cause the harboring of deep resentment, especially if a person feels they have been dealt with unjustly. Even more importantly, Saturn in Scorpio causes what we have been carrying around for far too long to rise to the surface in order for us to transform it. It may take persistence and discipline to eliminate that which is harmful and create healing in its place.
Pluto in Capricorn is about the lesson of establishing our identity and authority within our culture and society. It’s about learning to integrate our own philosophy and identity within the culture and society we find ourselves. This brings lessons in discipline and self-determination. Just as our self-image is conditioned by our parents so much of our sense of social identity is conditioned by the nation in which we grow up. Part of that self-image can be the over-identified with our jobs or careers which can cause us to manipulate and use others for our own ends.
In mutual reception, the tests for an individual will deal with the psychological image of self that one projects into ones environment and how that affects how ones life is being lived. The biggest part of this deals with how we each deal with authority figures and how that can result in power struggles, even if only within ourselves. This is really about self-mastery and breaking any control that we have allowed others to have over us.
And now they’ve both gone retrograde! We have in our hands (so to speak) a powerful opportunity for ourselves and our planet. If we are each able to take the energies of Saturn and be more honest with ourselves and more self-aware and then couple it with the energies of Pluto, fulfilling our individual growth, then we will clear away any karma as well as any addictive habits and emotions that no longer serve our good. In their place we can create and/or transform ourselves and our lives into what we truly want. Even if done on a purely individual basis, the new energies we create will ripple out and affect the world we live in, aiding in progress of the planet as a whole! Wow!!!
There’s a Full Moon in Scorpio on Thursday, April 25th at 6:25 a.m. EDT and it brings with it a lunar eclipse. To me, lunar eclipses are especially good for eclipsing the power of any emotion that no longer is in your best interest. It provides the energies to surpass that which is holding you back.
With the Sun in Taurus and the Full Moon in Scorpio, such things as jealousy, pride and “appetites” (whether for food or other things) need curbing. There are secrets that may need to be brought into the light, talked about and dispelled.
The Moon in Scorpio is always about strong emotions and passions. This Full Moon, with its lunar eclipse, offers the opportunity to take a close look at which ones help and which ones hinder your growth and life purpose. Then, using the energies of the eclipse, begin the process of letting go of those that hold you back.
This is a time of practicality. Success will be reached through determination and self-reliance. So, look to this Full Moon as an opportunity to break down barriers, remove obstacles, and just plain Spring houseclean your inner Temple…namely you!
Mercury moves in the sign of Taurus on Wednesday, May 1st at 11:37 a.m. EDT. You may find your thought processes becoming a little stubborn under the influence of this transit. You may find yourself resisting any outside influences in favor of what you consider to be “tried and true”.
These energies are patient and practical. More can be learned now through experience rather than books or schooling. There will be no rushing, with Mercury in Taurus, especially where ones thinking is concerned. Once a course of action is decided on, the tendency will be to stubbornly stick to it.
This is a really good time to build things slowly and steadily, especially where finances are concerned.
So there you have it! Although the planets haven’t moved much, they have certainly given us much to think about and even act upon. I hope you find this information helpful in your personal journey of understanding and enlightenment.
