Astrological Musings & More

Hello again!  I hope wherever you are you are finding ways to keep cool and enjoy the Summer.

Well, we’ve gathered a lot of pieces that make up our distinct astrological pictures thus far.  This time I want to talk about the planets and what each can represent in an individual’s chart.  For those who may still have doubts that distant planets could possible have an affect on us, I point out that the Sun, at 93 million miles, with its sun spots and solar flares creates disturbances here on Earth and even our own Moon can cause people to act strangely when it is full.  Why should there be doubt that other planets can have some affect on each of us at our birth and other times as well?

We’ve already talked about the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant (where the Sun was in the hour of your birth), but what about Mercury, Venus, and all the others – including the demoted Pluto?  What do they represent and why should we care where they are and what that means?

Mercury was named after the Messenger of the Gods and has rulership over communication, travel and trade.  In conjunction with its rulership of communication, it also rules handwriting, study, and literature.  The ability to learn and then convey that learning to others falls under its rulership as well.  You can see how this little planet can have such great meaning for each of us and how the meaning of what sign and house it is in at our births can be of great help to us in understanding who we are.

Venus, named for the goddess of love, is about love as well as the sense of touch, art and music, pleasure, sympathy and compassion. It is the energy behind our sociability.  Depending on the sign and house that Venus is in, it can tell us a great deal about the way we view love and respond to love and what we look for in close relationships.

Mars, god of war, tells us about our desire, energy and action.  It also tells us about our tempers.  It can be both constructive and destructive, depending on the sign and house it occupies.  It rules initiative, assertion, aggression, impulsiveness, resistance, accidents and even executive ability.  Quite a lot can be revealed to us by looking to this planet.

Jupiter, largest planet in our solar system and named for the father of the gods, rules expansion, optimism, confidence, and benevolence.  It also rules reason and judgment.  Because it rules expansion, it also rules higher education, promotion, and growth of any kind.  The placement of this planet in the chart by sign and house can reveal so much to us about the energies that can lead us to success in any or all areas of our lives.

Saturn is often referred to as the “stern teacher” and that’s because where it is placed in the chart by sign and house will reveal our lessons about limitation.  We are limitless beings in a limitless Universe, but wherever Saturn is placed we have come to learn how we are limiting ourselves in this area, this lifetime.  It teaches us endurance and persistence while also showing us where our responsibilities lie. Saturn also affords us the ability to turn inward through meditation and practice introspection so that we may better understand ourselves.  Saturn teaches discipline which allows us freedom from the constraints we have placed upon ourselves. A truly important message.

Uranus is considered a higher octave of Mercury as it also deals with the mind and nervous system but more intensely.  It has been given rulership over occult matters because of this and, therefore, rules intuition, the aura, and clairvoyance.  Uranus is about freedom, doing away with the old in favor of the new and can be quite original and exciting for whatever area of the chart it is found.  Depending on the sign it is found in, it can bring rebellion, disruption, anarchy and erratic behavior.  It’s still very revealing no matter what the sign or house it’s in.

Neptune, god of the sea, is considered a higher vibration of Venus because it rules feelings without physical contact.  When you combine this with its rulership over the spiritual, you can understand why it also rules mediumship, psychometry and even healing-at-a-distance.  There is great imagination and artistic creativity expressed by Neptune.  The other side of this nebulous planet is the possibility of escapist tendencies, being scattered, indecisive and impractical.  All this will be revealed by the house and sign where Neptune is found in the natal chart.

Pluto, god of the Underworld, is considered a higher octave of Mars.  Although astronomers have demoted Pluto, most astrologers still see the validity of including Pluto as a “generational” planet.  The outer planets – Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto – have more affect on an entire generation born under the rulership of the sign that one of these planets was in at the time of their birth.  As an example, the majority of the Baby-boomers were born with Pluto in Leo.  Since Pluto represents those things that haven’t yet been integrated into the collective consciousness, you could say that those with Pluto in Leo have lessons about leadership and about ego (an over-simplification).  Pluto is about transformation, regeneration, death, rebirth, the spirit world and astral projection.  A very interesting “planet” to say the least.

So there you have it.  The last of our pieces for now.  I could tell you about the twelve signs but there is so much information out there about them, even just as Sun sign definitions, I would just bore you.  My main point here is that if you are looking to better understand yourself, why you are here, why your life is the way it is and find ways to change it, having your natal chart done by a reputable astrologer who will give you all the necessary explanations can be a most valuable tool to beginning to answer these questions.  We are a puzzle and a chart has the pieces you may be looking for.  Go on an adventure and find what you mapped out for yourself to begin with!

Speaking of an adventure, we have a Full Moon occurring on Saturday, August 13th at 2:57 p.m. EDT in the sign of Aquarius.
This is a very social Full Moon.  Not only will people be friendly, although perhaps a little impersonal, but public affairs will become more important as our attention is drawn to the welfare of others.

When the Moon is in Aquarius the desire for freedom without restriction is emphasized and this being a Full Moon will only intensify that desire.  It’s a time to express your thoughts and your personal uniqueness!

Venus goes into Virgo on Sunday, August 21st at 6:11 p.m. EDT.  It is here that many of us may find ourselves analyzing our feelings and even being critical of the ones we love.  This can cut off the free flow of affection to us.  It can also stand in the way of our intuitive abilities especially where beauty is concerned.  Thinking and feeling are not one and the same.  This transit of Venus through Virgo can teach us a great deal about the difference in the two. This makes it an excellent time for writers, actors, and public speakers who can simulate emotions that they may not feel but understand intellectually.

And speaking of Virgo, the Sun will move into this analytical sign on Tuesday, August 23rd at 7:21 a.m. EDT.

Those born under this sign are introverted and most often quiet.  They do, however, have a penchant for analysis and a talent for detail.  Being an Earth sign, they use these abilities for very practical purposes and, for this reason, make excellent business people.  However, if they take this to an extreme, it becomes destructive rather than constructive and they may find themselves too critical, too conventional, worrying too much and too picky.

For the individual born under another sign, this is a time when work that needs attention to detail will be favored.  If it’s critical for you to concentrate in one particular area of your life, now is the time to tap into the energies and use them for this purpose.  Don’t let Virgo’s energies of worry become part of your repertoire.  As a matter of fact, Virgo is considered a “barren” sign (the virgin which has yet to bear fruit), which makes it perfect for ridding yourself of those worries that have been plaguing you.   Interesting.

To all of you born under this sign, I send you sincere wishes for a most

And the crowd goes wild!  Yes, it’s true. Mercury will turn direct, from its retrograde motion, on Friday,  August 26th at 6:03 p.m. EDT.  So now Mercury in Leo can be of assistance in helping us work with both our heads and our hearts – in combination.  What a formula for success!!!  It’s a time of planning and purpose – taking charge of our lives and moving forward with self-confidence in our ability to tackle and solve problems. Yes!  Look at us go!

Suggestions for future astrological articles are most welcome, as are your comments – pro and con.  Until next time…

In Light and Love,

Blessed Be
